Collage Day

It's been some time since I last made a paper collage and I woke up with that in mind. I didn't have a theme in mind, I just wanted to make.

Over time I've collected wallpaper samples and magazine spreads for use on such projects but as it turned out most of my collages have been digitally created. But today I was determined to put that collection to some use. I've never been very good at throwing things out and the packaging from my last LCD television would come in handy as my substrate. Measuring 26" x 48" this would be the largest piece I've worked on to date.

As I added the torn paper to cardboard I felt at times like I was being led by the pieces as to where to place them; this first layer was creating itself, there was very little external thought brought into the design process other than trying to source straight(ish) elements for the edges. My only intention for the piece was for it to have an autumnal feel hence the use of white strips of wallpaper for the background.

I enjoyed the rendomness of the process, I sometimes feel that I spend too much time positioning and repositioning layers in Photoshop, but this felt different, it felt liberating. I was free of the burden of perfection; gone was the ease of editing once glue was applied to paper and paper fixed to card. Having no direction or plan meant that it couldn't fail, I could just continue to add elements until I'm either excited, satisfied or bored.

In yesterday's session we were encouraged to do something in the following week related to our art practice that might not work, I suppose this is my "something". I won't be in a position to say if it worked or not for a while but this exercise is already making me question the way I work in general, if that was Jonathan's goal he's already succeeded.

to be continued...
