Idon't often make time to create paper collages despite having a sizeable store of wallpaper cuttings and old magazines, being an old techie I tend to gravitate more towards the PC than scissors.
But today I was determined to put that collection to some use. I've never been very good at throwing things out and the packaging from my last LCD television would come in handy as my substrate. Measuring 26" x 48" this would be the largest piece I've worked on to date.
As I added the torn paper to cardboard I felt at times like I was being led by the pieces as to where to place them; this first layer was creating itself, there was very little external thought brought into the design process other than trying to source straight(ish) elements for the edges. My only intention for the piece was for it to have an autumnal feel hence the use of white strips of wallpaper for the background.
I enjoyed the rendomness of the process, I sometimes feel that I spend too much time positioning and repositioning layers in Photoshop, but this felt different, it felt liberating. I was free of the burden of perfection; gone was the ease of editing once glue was applied to paper and paper fixed to card. Having no direction or plan meant that it couldn't fail, I could just continue to add elements until I'm either excited, satisfied or bored.
